New York Trans Rights Coalition Meeting

This past Saturday, the New York Trans Rights Coalition met in Albany to strategize about the advancement of civil rights and justice for transgender New Yorkers and the ongoing campaign to pass the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA).

In the day-long meeting, attendees discussed the status of GENDA at the end of last year’s legislative session; exchanged plans for the coming year, including campaign strategies for grassroots advocacy and lobby strategies. The group also brainstormed around other issues of importance that impact the day to day lives of trans-identified New Yorkers.

In what was truly an historic meeting, close to 50 members of the community were in attendance, predominantly trans-identified New Yorkers from across the state as well as the Assembly Sponsor of the bill, the Honorable Richard Gottfried and his chief of staff, and the chief of staff from Senate sponsor Honorable Daniel Squadron’s office.  Representatives from the Pride Agenda, Housing Works, NYCLU, HRC as well from trans rights advocacy and other allied organizations including Trans Activists of the Capital Region, In Our Own Voices, the New York Trans Rights Organization, Transgender Alliance of Central New York, Equality Rochester, Pride at Work - Rochester, Fordham Law School, LI Trans Coalition, League of Women Voters, Stonewall Democrats and Make the Road met at the New York State AFL-CIO headquarters in Albany.
